China Corrects Trump Choices
Initiated at Trump’s request, the 90 minute call focused primarily on trade issues. Xi urged the U.S. to acknowledge progress and remove negative measures that have hindered further cooperation.
On Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump held a pivotal phone conversation that underscored the importance of dialogue and cooperation between the two largest economies in the world. Initiated at Trump’s request, the call spanned approximately one and a half hours and focused primarily on trade issues. This exchange marked a critical step in recalibrating the strained relations between China and the U.S., particularly in light of recent trade tensions.
Progress on Geneva Agreement
During the call, Xi emphasised that recalibrating the "giant ship" of China-U.S. relations requires both nations to steer clear of disruptions and steer toward mutual understanding. Noting the recent Geneva economic and trade meeting, Xi described it as an important milestone in resolving bilateral issues through dialogue and consultation. He underscored that dialogue and cooperation are the "only correct choice" for China and the United States.
Xi reflected on the Geneva agreement, which both nations reached to roll back high tariffs for a 90-day period. Under the deal, the U.S. lowered tariffs on Chinese imports from over 145% to 30%, while China reduced its levies on American goods from 125% to 10%. Additionally, Beijing committed to lifting barriers on critical mineral exports. Xi reiterated China’s commitment to honouring agreements, urging the U.S. to acknowledge progress and remove negative measures that have hindered further cooperation.
